비디오 게임스 라이브는 최근 나오고 있는 여러 비디오 게임 음악 실황 공연 중 하나입니다. 일본에서는 소위 국민 게임들 - 마리오니 파판이니 - 하는 것들을 이렇게 공연한 일이 있었고, 물론 아마추어들의 콘서트도 있었고 비슷한 게 여럿 있지만 개중에 꽤 질긴 물건이라고 봐야겠죠. 출처는 유튜브니까 음질과 화질은 물론 엉망.

이외에도 고스트 리콘, 레인보우 식스, 스플린터 셀, 워크래프트, 미스트, 트론, 기타 등등. 프로그램 보니까 꽤 많은 음악들이 나오나 보네요.

각설하고 비디오 게임 음악은 음원조차도 지원되지 않는 초창기에서 기초적인 8비트를 지나 꽤 먼 길을 왔습니다. 마침내 사운드카드의 음원에 의존하는 단순한 미디 방식을 버리고 CD 사운드트랙이 사용된 이후로는 꽤 거창한 물건들이 나오고 있지요. 전처럼 게임 제작사 내의 담당자가 아닌 빌 브라운(리턴 투 캐슬 울펜스타인, C&C 제네럴스)이니 헨리 그랙슨 윌리엄(메탈기어 솔리드)이니 하는 헐리웃 영화 일 하는 사람들 끌어다 게임음악에 손을 대는 경우도 있고, 마이클 지아찌노(메달 오브 아너로 음악 일을 시작해서 최근에 미션 임파서블 3 OST에 참여했죠)니 제레미 소울(토탈 어나이얼레이션)이니 마티 오도넬(미스, 헤일로)이니 게임 음악으로 시작해서 '큰손'이 되는 사람들도 있습니다. 물론 노부오 우에마쓰(파이널 판타지)나 그런 사람들은 예전에도 유명했지만, 그때와 비교하면 지금의 비디오 산업 시장은 어마어마하게 커버렸고 한 게임에 들이는 비용도 수직 상승했으니 말입니다.  근 10년 전인, 1998년에 하트 오브 다크니스가 이미 최초로 진짜 오케스트라를 동원한 OST를 써먹기 시작했고...

물론 똑같이 돈 들여서 풀사이즈 오케스트라가 쿵쿵 울려대고 합창단이 악 써대는 OST라 해도 영화음악과 게임음악은 단순히 비교할 수는 없는 물건이며, 근본적인 차이가 있긴 합니다. 뭐, 어차피 둘 다 상업음악이란 측면에서 예술성 따지긴 민망하지만, 게임은 인터렉티브 매체고 영화는 수동적인 매체니까요. 게임음악은 영화음악처럼 장면장면에 명확히 맞춰넣기가 힘든 편이죠. 그래서 고작 전투시 음악, 평화시 음악 식으로 나눈다거나 하는 경우가 대부분이고 상당히 반복적인 풍의 음악이 나오는 게 대부분이었습니다. 덕분에 사람들에게 있어서는 하나의 음악이 뇌리에 깊게 각인되는 효과를 낳게 됩니다. 영화는 하나의 메인 테마를 변주해서 여러 차례 써먹는 정도지만, 게임에선 같은 음악이 플레이 와중에 계속 반복되서 나오는 경우가 많았잖아요. 그래서 택할 수 있는 방법이 영화와는 좀 달라야 하겠죠.

허나 최근 들어선 콜 오브 듀티 같은 물건처럼 영화적 연출을 도입해서 게임에 강제적으로 어떤 상황을 연출하고 음악 깔아주는 경우가 많아졌죠. 역시 콜 오브 듀티를 예로 들자면, 영국 공수부대로 다리 사수하는 미션에서 지원군 몰려올 때 나오던 음악이라던가. - 물론 컷씬이나 스테이지별로 음악을 집어넣는 건 예전부터 많이 써먹었지만, 그건 엄밀히 말해 조금 다른 거니 말예요.

게임음악이 앞으로 더 발전할까요? 글쎄요. CD에 이어 MP3까지 나와서 기술적 제약이 거의 다 철거된 상태니 그건 알 수 없죠. 어쨌건 OST는 음악 자체 못잖게 원래 작품의 퀄리티에도 영향을 많이 받는 물건이고, 근사한 음악도 게임 자체가 형편없으면 잊혀지기 마련이고(이를테면 국산 온라인 RPG, SUN의 경우는 돈 왕창 쓰자고 무려 반지의 제왕 OST를 작곡했던 하워드 쇼어를 끌고 왔죠. 게임 자체가 엉망이라 순식간에 잊혀졌지만.) 단순한 미디음이라도 어떻게 쓰느냐에 따라 얼마든 사람들의 감탄사를 자아내기 마련(일본의 신작 게임에는 작곡가의 연륜을 자랑하듯이 아직도 그런 걸 고집하는 것도 있죠. 이를테면 로스트 오딧세이라던가)이니까요. 어쨌건 근사한 게임은 보통 근사한 음악이 딸려있기 마련이란 건 확실해 보입니다. 그러니 결론은...저런 행사 꽤 많이 하나 본데 우리나라에 안 오나 모르겠네요. 하긴 해봐야 아마 아무도 안 보러 갈 테니...
